Where do you need GFCI outlets?
Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets cut power in a fraction of a second when they detect current leaking to ground, which helps prevent shocks. They are expected in wet and damp areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages and outdoors.
If your kitchen, bathroom or patio outlets don't have test and reset buttons, or aren't protected by a GFCI breaker, ask an electrician to check them.

When should outlets and switches be replaced?
- Plugs fall out or the outlet feels loose
- Cover plates are cracked or the outlet is discolored
- The outlet or switch feels warm or buzzes
- Two prong outlets that can't take grounded plugs
- You need more outlets, USB outlets or a dedicated appliance circuit
Are smart switches worth installing?
Smart switches let you schedule lights, control them from your phone and add dimming. Many need a neutral wire in the switch box, which some older homes don't have, so an electrician can check your boxes first.
Pair smart switches with lighting installation or ceiling fans for full control.
Can you replace two prong outlets?
Two prong outlets usually mean there is no ground wire. An electrician can run a ground, install GFCI protection where grounding isn't practical, or recommend rewiring if the circuits are old.
If many outlets are ungrounded, read about home rewiring options.
Questions people ask
Why did my GFCI outlet stop working?
It may have tripped. Press reset firmly. If it won't reset, trips again, or other outlets on the circuit are dead, call an electrician to find the fault.
Can I add an outlet to an existing wall?
Yes. The electrician extends a nearby circuit or runs a new one, provided the circuit has capacity, and installs the outlet in a new box.
