Level 1 or Level 2 charging?

Level 1 uses a standard 120 volt outlet and the cord that comes with most EVs. It's slow but fine for short daily drives. Level 2 uses a 240 volt dedicated circuit, either hardwired or through a heavy duty outlet, and suits most owners who drive daily or have larger batteries.

The electrician will recommend the circuit size based on your charger, your vehicle and your panel.

Do you need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. If your panel has spare capacity and space, the charger can usually be added directly. If AC, pool equipment and other loads already use most of it, you may need a load management device or an electrical panel upgrade.

A load calculation answers the question before you buy the charger.

Does EV charger installation need a permit?

A new 240 volt circuit generally needs a permit. Oro Valley's EV charging station checklist, for example, asks for a site plan showing the charger and panel, a one line diagram and load calculations when a new 240 volt circuit is added.

Requirements differ between Tucson, the towns and Pima County, so the licensed contractor confirms them for your address.

What about HOAs and commercial charging?

Some HOAs set rules for where chargers and conduit can go, so check before installation. Oro Valley's checklist notes that owners are responsible for following HOA rules.

For workplaces, apartments and retail sites, a commercial electrician can plan multiple chargers and the supply they need.
