Why does a breaker keep tripping?

The three most common causes are an overloaded circuit (too many appliances running at once), a short circuit (a hot wire touching a neutral or ground), and a ground fault (current leaking to ground, often near water). A worn or faulty breaker can also trip when nothing is wrong with the circuit.

In Tucson homes, overloads often show up when the AC, a pool pump or a space heater starts on a circuit that's already busy.

What can you safely check before calling?

  • Unplug everything on the circuit, then reset the breaker once.
  • Plug devices back in one at a time to see which one causes the trip.
  • Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips immediately. That points to a short and needs an electrician.
  • Never tape or hold a breaker in the on position.

What are AFCI breakers and do you need them?

Arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breakers detect the electrical arcing that can happen when wiring is damaged, loose or chewed, and they shut the circuit off before it can start a fire. Current electrical codes call for AFCI protection on many household circuits, especially bedrooms and living areas.

If your home was built before AFCI breakers were common, an electrician can tell you which circuits would benefit and whether your panel accepts them.

When does a breaker problem mean a new panel?

Breakers that won't stay seated, a panel that feels hot, signs of corrosion, or a panel brand known for problems can all mean replacement is safer than repair. Panel replacement needs a permit in Tucson, as the City of Tucson permit guidance lists panel replacement or repair.

See electrical panel upgrades for what that involves.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripped breaker?

Resetting once after unplugging the load is fine. If it trips again straight away, or trips often, stop and call an electrician because the cause may be a short or a failing breaker.

Can a breaker go bad?

Yes. Breakers wear out and can trip too easily or fail to trip. An electrician can test the breaker and replace it with one of the correct type and rating.
