Is the outage yours or the utility's?
Look outside. If the whole street is dark, check your utility first. Tucson Electric Power has an outage map and takes reports by app, online or at 520-623-7711. TRICO Electric serves northwest Tucson and Marana south to Green Valley and Sahuarita, so check which utility serves your address.
If your neighbors have power and you don't, or only some rooms are out, the fault is most likely in your panel, meter connection or wiring.

What can you check before calling an electrician?
- Open the panel and look for a tripped main breaker or branch breakers in the middle position.
- Reset a tripped breaker once by pushing it fully off, then on.
- Press the test and reset buttons on GFCI outlets in kitchens, baths, garages and outdoors.
- If half the house is out, a 240 volt breaker or a supply connection may have failed. Call an electrician.
- If you see a downed line, stay away and call 911.
What causes a partial outage in a Tucson home?
Common causes include a failed main or branch breaker, a loose or burned connection at the panel or meter base, damaged service conductors after a storm, and a GFCI outlet that has tripped and cut power to other outlets downstream.
The National Weather Service notes that during monsoon season, lightning and high winds can interrupt power and make lines short out, so outages and surge damage often cluster in summer.
How can you prevent the next outage?
An electrician can tighten connections, replace worn breakers and, if needed, upgrade an older panel. For backup power, ask about a generator with a transfer switch, and protect electronics with whole house surge protection.
If the outage involved burning smells or scorch marks, have the panel inspected even after power returns.
Questions people ask
Who do I call first, TEP or an electrician?
If the whole neighborhood is out, contact your utility. If only your home or part of it is out, call an electrician.
Why is half my house out of power?
Homes have two incoming legs of power. If one fails at a breaker, the meter or the service connection, roughly half the circuits go dark. This needs an electrician or the utility to diagnose.
