How does whole house surge protection work?

A surge protective device (SPD) is installed at or beside your main panel. When voltage spikes, it diverts the excess energy to ground before it travels through your circuits to appliances and electronics.

It doesn't replace point of use surge strips for sensitive electronics, but it reduces the size of the surge that reaches them.

Why is surge protection worth it in Tucson?

The National Weather Service warns that during monsoon season, June 15 to September 30, lightning can strike transformers and lines and interrupt power. Surges can also happen when power is restored after an outage.

Modern AC systems, variable speed pool pumps, smart thermostats and appliances all contain electronics that can be damaged by repeated surges, not just a single big one.

What does installation involve?

  • The electrician checks your panel, grounding and bonding.
  • The SPD is connected to a breaker or the service equipment as the manufacturer specifies.
  • Grounding is corrected if needed, since surge protection depends on a good path to ground.
  • The electrician explains the indicator light so you can tell if the device needs replacing after a major event.

Can you add it with other work?

Yes. Surge protection is often added during an electrical panel upgrade, a generator installation or after storm damage repairs.

If your electronics were damaged in a storm, have the electrician check the panel and outlets before replacing anything.

Questions people ask

Does whole house surge protection stop a direct lightning strike?

No device can guarantee protection from a direct strike. Whole house surge protection is designed to reduce the far more common surges that come in through utility lines.

How long does a surge protector last?

Surge protective devices wear with each surge they absorb. Many have an indicator light, and the electrician can tell you when to check or replace it.
